The Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard & Airmen Club Fifth Annual Red, White and Blue Luncheon, May 6, 2013

In what has become a great springtime tradition, Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard & Airmen’s Club celebrated its fifth annual Red, White and Blue Luncheon at 21 Club on May 6, 2013.

The luncheon salutes both civilian and military honorees who make a difference in the lives of our troops and veterans. This year’s honorees were Brigadier General Martha A. Meeker, United States Air Force, Veronica Kelly and Cynthia Maltese.

The Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club, since 1919 continues to fulfill its mission, as the only private organization in the New York area to provide accommodations at subsidized rates and club-type facilities for servicemen and servicewomen, military retirees and veterans and their families visiting New York City. Spring Show NYC Arts Night Out, May 3, 2013

Over 1,000 young patrons from the city’s top cultural institutions packed the Park Avenue Armory for the Arts Night Out, a festive celebration of the Spring Show NYC co-chaired Emily Collins, Abigail Starliper, Maggie Moore, and Lydia Melamed Johnson. They created this evening to introduce their generation to the joys of collecting. So, in addition to mixing and mingling, they can visit the individual
booths, where the dealers give a brief talk about their particular specialty.

On Tuesday, April 30th, The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s (OCRF) Junior Board celebrated its fourth annual Evening at City Bakery, from 8-11 p.m., with dinner, drinks, hot chocolate and a fabulous silent auction to benefit OCRF.

The event is part of the OCRF Junior Board’s annual campaign to increase public awareness of the symptoms and early detection challenges of ovarian cancer, a disease that affects approximately 22,000 American women annually. Because there is no early detection test and symptoms are vague, ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed in advanced stages, and only 45% of patients survive more than five years. The five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer has increased by only 8% in the last 30 years. Now more than ever, scientific research to find more effective diagnostics, treatments, and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer is needed.

The OCRF Junior Board’s efforts are specifically focused on expanding awareness of OCRF and its mission to younger members of the community and supporting events that will raise much-needed funds for the cause.

Lisa Ling, Nicole Scherzinger & Pascale Rothman talk to Erin Mooney about supporting the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST LA) during their 15th Annual From Slavery to Freedom Event at Sofitel Hotel Beverly Hills.

The Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST), a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1998 in the wake of the El Monte sweatshop case where 72 Thai garment workers were kept for eight years in slavery and debt bondage. Upon their release and under the leadership of CAST’s founder Dr. Kathryn MacMahon, a group of concerned community activists realized something needed to be done to address the re-emergence of slavery in our own backyards.

CAST was created in 1998 to provide intensive case management, comprehensive services, and advocacy to survivors healing from the unspeakable violence endured during slavery. Today, CAST is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual human rights organization located in Los Angeles that has been nationally and internationally recognized for its dedication to the identification of trafficking survivors, the mobilization of all sectors of the community to identify and advocate against trafficking, and the provision of direct services for victims.

Innovations for Poverty Action is a nonprofit dedicated to discovering what works to help the world’s poor. The organization designs and evaluates programs in real contexts with real people, and provides hands-on assistance to bring successful programs to scale.

Happy Food Revolution Day! Food Revolution Day on 17 May is a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills. It’s a chance for people to come together within their homes, schools, workplaces and communities to cook and share their kitchen skills, food knowledge and resources. Food Revolution Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of good food and better food education for everyone by focusing on three simple actions – cook it, share it, live it. The first Food Revolution Day took place on 19 May 2012 with more than 1,000 events in 664 cities across 62 countries.

100% of net funds raised for Jamie’s charities, after deduction of third party transaction charges, will go to food-education projects in the UK, US and Australia. In the UK, every £1 will fund one child to do a class through the Food Education Box programme in schools, on behalf of Jamie’s School Kitchen Garden Project. In the US, every US$1 will fund one child to do a class through the Learn Your Fruits and Vegetables programme in schools and after-school programmes, on behalf of the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation. Sentebale is a charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. It helps the most vulnerable children in Lesotho get the support they need to lead healthy and productive lives.

Sentebale works with local grassroots organisations to help these children – the victims of extreme poverty and Lesotho’s HIV/AIDS epidemic. Together, they are making a big difference to these children’s lives.

The success of the Mamohato programme, which provides life-skills and psychosocial support to children living with HIV/AIDS at week-long camps and monthly club meetings, has refined the organization’s guiding vision and mission.

Having proved the effectiveness of this concept in Lesotho, their vision is to give a new generation in Southern Africa the support they need to shape a prosperous future for themselves.

The charity aims to replicate the success of the Mamohato programme across a network of countries in Southern Africa. Our mission is to become the leading organisation in the provision of psychosocial support for children living with HIV in Southern Africa.
